Major Concerns Raised Over Voting at Gorton and Denton By-Election
Leading pollster Robert Hayward has announced his intention to raise serious concerns regarding voting irregularities in the Gorton and Denton by-election, following a critical report from election observers. Democracy Volunteers, a prominent election monitoring organisation, reported observing illegal 'family voting' in a staggering 68 per cent of the 22 polling stations they monitored within the constituency.
Alarming Levels of Illegal Voting Practices
The practice of 'family voting', where voters confer with or direct each other on how to cast their ballots, was explicitly made illegal by the Election Bill in 2023. Democracy Volunteers stated that these were the highest levels of family voting ever recorded in their ten-year history of observing elections across the United Kingdom. This revelation has cast a shadow over the integrity of the by-election process in Gorton and Denton.
Lord Hayward's Response and Planned Actions
Lord Hayward, who championed the Election Bill that outlawed such practices, expressed profound disappointment upon learning of the findings. He plans to discuss the concerning report in detail with Democracy Volunteers, the Electoral Commission, and government officials. His aim is to address these irregularities and ensure that future elections uphold the highest standards of democratic integrity.
The by-election in Gorton and Denton, which saw polls open recently, is now under scrutiny as these allegations of widespread illegal voting practices threaten to undermine public confidence in the electoral outcome. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing election laws and maintaining transparent voting procedures in local constituencies.
