A gripping true crime drama described as 'devastating' and 'haunting' is set to air tonight on Channel 4. Titled Vengeance: Murder on the Heath, the two-part series delves into a fatal love triangle that resulted in the death of a 21-year-old man in 2011.
Plot and Background
The series centres on the killing of Gagandip Singh, a talented young television entrepreneur and Sikh community influencer, by Harvinder 'Ravi' Shoker. The case also involves Mundhill Mahil, the woman both men were romantically pursuing. The drama utilises police interviews, text messages, witness statements, and court records to reconstruct the events.
According to Channel 4, Gagandip had cultivated a close friendship with 19-year-old student doctor Mundill Mahil. However, when he turned up unannounced at her Brighton student house one night, she accused him of sexual assault. After she managed to push him off, Gagandip pleaded for forgiveness. Mundill confided her distress to Ravi, who was also in love with her, and together they devised a plan to lure Gagandip back to the house to 'teach him a lesson'.
After a vicious beating left him unconscious, Gagandip was bundled into the boot of his sister's Mercedes and transported to Blackheath, where the vehicle was set on fire. A post-mortem examination confirmed he was still alive when the car was ignited but died from toxic fume inhalation. Although she was not present during the attack, Mundill was characterised at trial as a 'manipulative' and 'ruthless' young woman, dubbed 'the Sikh Virgin' at the heart of a 'twisted love triangle'.
Cast and Crew
Leading the cast are Sasha Desouza-Willock (known for Adult Material) as Mundill Mahil, Dee Ahluwalia (Buddha of Suburbia) as Gagandip Singh, and Ikky Kabir (Bait) as Harvinder Shoker. The series is directed and written by Aysha Rafaela, who said: 'It's a haunting crime that continues to cast a long shadow and I am proud to have been able to work with such a talented young cast of up and coming British Asian actors to bring this devastating story to Channel 4.'
Shaminder Nahal, Channel 4's head of specialist factual, added: 'This powerful and gripping series takes us straight into the hearts and minds of a group of young people navigating a messy world of blurred lines, fear, shame and violence. Vengeance: Murder on the Heath will get under your skin, and stay in your mind long after watching.'
