The 47-year-old Dutchman faced mounting pressure after a series of poor results and performances. Tensions with Mohamed Salah also emerged, with the Egyptian making critical comments after being benched and later being released from his contract early. Salah called for a return to 'heavy metal football' as he departed.
Andoni Iraola has emerged as the favourite to succeed Slot, with the Spaniard's attacking style seen as a good fit for Liverpool. The club's board issued a statement praising Slot's achievements, including winning the 20th league title, and acknowledged the difficulty of the decision.
