Donald Trump has said he would not pay four-figure prices for World Cup tickets, in a phone interview with the New York Post. The former US president questioned the value of tickets for the United States men's national team's opening match against Paraguay, claiming he 'did not know that number'.
Fifa set a base price of $1,120 for Category 3 tickets for the match, the cheapest available to most fans. Trump told the Post: 'I wouldn't pay it either, to be honest.' He added that he would be disappointed if his supporters from Queens and Brooklyn could not afford to attend, but described the tournament as 'an amazing success'.
Trump's comments came a day after Fifa president Gianni Infantino defended the use of dynamic pricing for the 2026 World Cup, the first time the tournament has used the system. Infantino argued that market rates were necessary to prevent resale at higher prices, and claimed that college games in the US cost at least $300 – a claim swiftly debunked by various outlets.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ticket prices have sparked controversy, with many fans expressing concern over affordability.
