Steven Spielberg has disclosed that Tom Selleck was the original choice to play Indiana Jones, but contractual commitments to the television series Magnum PI forced him to relinquish the iconic role. Speaking on the IMO podcast hosted by Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, the Oscar-winning director recounted the casting process for Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Spielberg explained that he and George Lucas had auditioned numerous actors for the part and were impressed by Selleck’s test. “We both discovered and decided that Tom Selleck should play Indiana Jones,” he said. However, unaware of Selleck’s outstanding contract with CBS for Magnum PI, the network quickly accelerated production on the show, preventing the actor from taking the role.
Spielberg then suggested Harrison Ford after watching a rough cut of The Empire Strikes Back. Despite Lucas’ initial hesitation that Ford was too associated with Han Solo, he eventually sent the script to Ford. Ford went on to star in all five Indiana Jones films, cementing his status as a Hollywood legend.
Selleck later wrote in his 2024 memoir You Never Know that his only regret was the perpetual “what-if.” In a lighthearted exchange, Spielberg quipped that he would not have allowed Selleck to keep his trademark moustache, though he conceded that if the films were successful, Selleck could have demanded it later.
