Tasmanian Town Shaken by Murder-Suicide of Couple in Their 60s
Tasmania Murder-Suicide Shocks Quiet Town

A peaceful town in Tasmania, home to just over 1,000 residents, has been rocked by an 'extremely confronting' murder-suicide. The bodies of a couple aged in their sixties were discovered by police officers at a rural property on Native Corners Road just after 10am on Friday.

It is understood that the man phoned a family member, who then called triple-zero. Detective-Inspector David Gill from Tasmania Police described the scene as 'extremely confronting' for first responders. Paramedics were the first to find the man and woman deceased at the property.

Detective-Inspector Gill thanked the family member who provided detailed information to police. 'I can't, out of respect for the family members, and also due to the nature of the investigation, I won't go into too much detail,' he told media on Friday. 'I can categorically say that this couple were not known to police in any way, shape or form, there had been no interaction at all.'

Detective-Inspector Gill said it appeared the man had ended his own life using a knife and that a 'female inside the residence has received injuries causing her death'. 'The investigation thus far indicates it is a family violence incident and we are treating this as a murder-suicide,' he added.

Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
