Nicola Sturgeon Opens Up on Divorce and Life Beyond Politics
Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister of Scotland, has publicly addressed her divorce from Peter Murrell, the ex-Chief Executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), revealing that the split encompasses more than just his criminal charges. In a candid interview on ITV's The Assembly programme, Sturgeon explained that while Murrell's arrest was a significant factor, it was not the sole reason for ending their 14-year marriage.
The Embezzlement Allegations and Marital Strain
Peter Murrell faces serious accusations of embezzling £459,000 from SNP funds between 2010 and 2023, during his tenure as chief executive. Allegedly, the misappropriated money was used to purchase luxury items, jewellery, and even a motorhome. Murrell was initially arrested in April 2023 as part of a police investigation into the party's finances and was formally charged in April 2024.
Sturgeon acknowledged the public scrutiny, stating, 'There's been a lot of public coverage of my husband being accused of crime and stuff. That's what everybody thinks it will be, and I'm not saying that's not a factor – because when you're faced with something like that, it kind of, completely blows your entire world. But if I'm being honest, it was probably more than that.'
Personal Reflections and Future Directions
Since announcing the divorce in January 2023, Sturgeon has remained private about her romantic future but admitted she is open to relationships with either men or women, refusing to label her sexual orientation. She emphasised a desire to explore her identity beyond politics, noting, 'I've been this career-focused politician all my life and I'm going into a phase of life where I want to find out a bit more about who I am as a person, not just as a politician.'
Sturgeon described this transition as 'really hard' but ultimately rewarding, believing it will lead to greater happiness. She is set to step down as an MSP at the Holyrood elections in May 2025, concluding a 27-year career in the Scottish Parliament.
Life in the Public Eye and Potential Relocation
The former First Minister also hinted at possibly leaving Scotland, describing it as a 'goldfish bowl' where her every action is intensely scrutinised. She expressed a need to 'breathe freely' and has considered moving, potentially to London, where she has spent considerable time recently. Sturgeon reflected that her political focus required sacrificing personal experiences, such as living abroad.
Background of the Relationship and Media Appearance
Sturgeon and Murrell's relationship spanned from 2003 to 2025, having first met at an SNP youth event in 1988 and marrying in 2010 at Òran Mór in Glasgow. Their separation was announced via social media in January 2023.
The interview was part of The Assembly series, which features autistic, neurodivergent, or learning-disabled interviewers questioning celebrities. Season two premieres on April 10 at 10pm on STV and STV Player.
