The BBC has launched an investigation into allegations that two stars of Strictly Come Dancing used cocaine, according to a report in the Sun on Sunday. The allegations were reportedly made in a legal submission on behalf of former contestant Wynne Evans, the Welsh opera singer who appeared on the show last year.
The newspaper claims that the alleged drug use was “talked about widely among the cast” of the BBC One primetime show, and that others had reported allegations of drug taking to the broadcaster. The names of the two stars have not been disclosed.
A BBC spokesperson said: “We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.” The BBC has appointed a law firm to lead the investigation.
The latest probe follows a series of controversies involving Strictly. In 2024, the BBC reviewed bullying and harassment allegations against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, upholding some complaints, and Pernice left the show. Another professional, Graziano Di Prima, also departed after allegations about his conduct. In July 2024, the BBC introduced new welfare measures including chaperones in training rooms and additional welfare producers.
Evans himself was dropped by the BBC for using “inappropriate language” during the launch of the Strictly tour earlier this year. He later left his BBC Radio Wales show after his contract was not renewed.
