Julian Clary Stands by Infamous Norman Lamont Joke 26 Years On

Julian Clary has insisted he does not regret his notorious joke about fisting Norman Lamont at the 1993 British Comedy Awards, despite the backlash that followed. The 60-year-old comedian told The Guardian: 'It's a very good joke, and I stand by it.'

The joke, made while presenting an award, prompted a campaign by The Sun to have Clary banned from television. The Independent Television Commission later ruled the comment 'wholly unacceptable', although it aired after the watershed to 13 million viewers.

Clary, who has previously attributed the joke to being on Valium and Rohypnol at the time, now suggests divine intervention may have been responsible. He said: 'I like to think he made me say something outrageous in order to clear my diary and give me some time off.'
