BBC Terminates Scott Mills' Contract Following Historic Relationship Allegations
Veteran BBC Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills has been abruptly taken off air and his contract terminated by the broadcaster following allegations concerning a "historic relationship" from more than ten years ago. The sudden departure of the 53-year-old presenter has sent shockwaves through the corporation and its loyal listener base.
Abrupt Removal From Broadcasting Schedule
Mills was unexpectedly removed from his Radio 2 breakfast show last week, with his final broadcast occurring on Tuesday, March 24. He signed off with his customary "See you tomorrow" phrase, giving no indication of his impending departure. The BBC confirmed his exit on Monday through a spokesperson who stated: "While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC."
According to reports in The Mirror, the allegations relate to a relationship with a male individual from over a decade ago. Representatives for Mills have been contacted for comment regarding these claims, but no statement has been issued at this time.
Immediate Replacement and On-Air Reactions
Veteran DJ Gary Davies has taken over the breakfast show slot from Wednesday onwards, though he has made no direct reference to Mills' departure. When unexpectedly hosting the breakfast show on Wednesday, Davies simply told listeners: "Morning, Gary in for Scott," without addressing the reason for Mills' absence.
The news of Mills' sacking led Monday's noon bulletin on BBC Radio 2, his former station. Fellow Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine expressed his surprise during his own show, stating he was "taken aback" by the news and had only learned about it 17 minutes earlier from the BBC website. Vine told his audience: "I only had the information that was given to you in the bulletin, I have nothing more, that it was allegations about Scott Mills's personal conduct, which have led to him being sacked."
Internal Communications and Audience Impact
In an email sent to BBC staff, Lorna Clarke, director of music, wrote: "I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock. Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV."
Clarke acknowledged the impact on listeners, adding: "Of course, it will also come as a shock to our audience and loyal breakfast show listeners too. I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I'm able to. While I appreciate many of you will have questions, I hope you can understand that I am not going to be saying anything further now."
Career Highlights and Recent Success
The Southampton-born presenter had taken over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Zoe Ball last year and had been enjoying significant success in the role. The latest Rajar figures from February showed Mills had achieved an average weekly audience of 6.47 million between October and December 2025, representing an increase from 6.16 million the previous quarter and marking his highest figure since assuming the breakfast show position.
According to the BBC annual report from July 2025, Mills earned between £355,000 and £359,999 annually for his work with the broadcaster. His BBC career began on Radio 1 in the late 1990s as the early breakfast host, before progressing to weekend slots and then an early evening show while providing maternity cover for Sara Cox. When Cox did not return, the programme was renamed The Scott Mills Show.
In 2022, Mills joined Radio 2, replacing Steve Wright in his weekday afternoon slot before eventually taking up the Breakfast Show following Ball's departure. Beyond his radio work, Mills has presented a weekend show on Radio 5 Live and appeared on series 12 of Strictly Come Dancing, where he was paired with professional dancer Joanne Clifton, becoming the fifth couple to be eliminated.
Mills also won Celebrity Race Across The World with his husband in 2024 and recently appeared in a Traitors-themed sketch on Comic Relief. He has served as a commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest on the BBC and is scheduled to support Boyzone on their Two For The Road gigs in June.
