Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, has been hospitalised and is in a “critical but stable” condition, his spokesperson confirmed on Sunday evening. The 81-year-old’s spokesperson, Ted Goodman, posted on social media: “Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak. We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”
The cause of Giuliani’s hospitalisation remains unclear, as does the duration of his stay. He hosted his online show, “America’s Mayor Live”, on Friday night from Florida, but noted his voice was “a little under the weather”.
Giuliani gained widespread acclaim for his leadership after the 11 September 2001 attacks on New York City, earning the nickname “America’s mayor”. He later served as an attorney for Donald Trump in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, leading to criminal charges in two US states and a defamation lawsuit from election workers. Giuliani has denied wrongdoing in the criminal cases. Trump previously pardoned him for related charges.
Former President Donald Trump reacted on his social platform Truth Social, writing: “Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition.” He added, without evidence, that Giuliani “was right about everything” and that Democrats “did anything possible to destroy our nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!”
This is not Giuliani’s first hospitalisation; he was previously admitted last year after a car crash in New Hampshire.
