Royal Book Alleges Physical Altercation Between Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Senior Aide
A new book has made explosive claims that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York, was involved in a physical altercation with one of the late Queen Elizabeth II's most senior aides. The incident is detailed in royal author Robert Hardman's forthcoming book, Elizabeth II, which has been serialised in the Daily Mail, shedding light on tensions within the royal household.
Alleged Confrontation Over Palace Event
According to the book, the altercation occurred when Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor allegedly lashed out at Vice-Admiral Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt, the master of the Royal Household. The confrontation reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a Pitch@Palace event that the former Duke wanted to host at Buckingham Palace. Sir Tony informed him that there was no available space, leading to the heated exchange.
A senior member of staff described the incident to Hardman, noting it was a kinetic blow that caused astonishment among royal staff. The staff member explained, It was a routine household matter. The Duke wanted to have a reception and there wasn't any room. It was as simple as that. Tony said he'd have to wait his turn like anybody else and the Duke went for him.
Escalation and Reporting of the Incident
Sir Tony, who has held his position since 2013 and continues to serve under King Charles III, is said to have reported the altercation to the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Peel. Lord Peel then raised the matter with the then Prince Charles, who allegedly spoke to his brother about it. The book further claims that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor later called Lord Peel, accusing him of calling people and causing problems.
Additional Alleged Incidents of Confrontation
The book details another alleged incident in Windsor, where grooms from the Royal Mews were riding horses on the estate. An approaching car was seen revving its engine aggressively, and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was in the car, reportedly bellowed at the driver, Who the f*** do you think you are? He then demanded the driver's name and took the issue up with the late Queen in person.
Furthermore, the book highlights the anger within the royal household over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's decision to record the infamous 2019 Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis at the palace, against advice. Lord Peel is quoted as saying that Andrew had an overriding belief that he was better than the rest of us.
Background and Recent Developments
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was stripped of his military roles and use of the HRH title in January 2022, shortly before settling a legal dispute with Virginia Giuffre, who alleged she was assaulted by him. In February, he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, and on 22 March, he was pictured for the first time since his arrest, walking his dogs at his new home on the Sandringham Estate.
Both Buckingham Palace and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor have been contacted for comment by The Independent, but no statements have been released at this time. These allegations add to the ongoing scrutiny of his conduct and relationships within the royal family.
