Richard Keys has taken a swipe at Manchester United following their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, which condemned the Red Devils to their lowest-ever Premier League finish. The former Sky Sports presenter referenced an infamous quote from Sir Alex Ferguson, saying: 'In the end, it's Manchester United lads!'
The jibe came as Keys assessed the final in Bilbao, arguing that the competition was weaker this season without Champions League dropouts. He said: 'Again, I don’t want to undermine what they’ve done but that competition wasn't this season what it's been in previous years. Not without the Champions League, it was a lot easier to win it.'
Keys' comment echoes Ferguson's alleged 'Lads, it's Tottenham' remark, which former United midfielder Paul Scholes recently criticised. Scholes said: 'It feels a bit derogatory to talk about such a great football club like that.' Keys' colleague Andy Gray agreed that United were not a tough opponent, noting that the team they faced were not a typical Champions League side.
Manchester United now face a summer rebuild under Ruben Amorim, with several players expected to be sold, including Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, who has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia.
