Leaked messages from a private Telegram group for Young Republican leaders have revealed widespread use of racist, antisemitic and misogynistic language, as well as violent rhetoric, according to a report by Politico.
The 2,900 pages of texts, sent between January and August, allegedly include references to Black people as "monkeys", praise for Adolf Hitler, and suggestions that political opponents be sent to gas chambers. Members from New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont chapters participated.
Peter Giunta, former president of the New York State Young Republicans and a Trump supporter, created the group. In one exchange, he allegedly said opponents "are going to the gas chamber". Another member, Joe Maligno, reportedly joked about fixing showers to fit "the Hitler aesthetic".
Giunta has since been fired from his role as chief of staff to a New York state assemblyman. He apologised for "inexcusable language" but questioned whether the messages were doctored, claiming they were obtained by extortion.
New York Representative Elise Stefanik, who had endorsed Giunta, said she was "absolutely appalled" and called for those responsible to step down immediately.
