Reform UK Councillor Under Fire for Handing Out 'Racist' Leaflets in Essex
Reform Councillor in 'Racist' Leaflet Scandal

A Reform UK councillor has been plunged into a political firestorm and is facing a formal investigation after being caught distributing leaflets bearing a slogan with direct ties to a notorious far-right group.

The controversy centres on Thurrock councillor, James Halden, who was photographed handing out campaign literature in Essex. The leaflets featured the phrase "We are full up", a known slogan historically used by the British National Party (BNP).

The images, which quickly circulated online, triggered immediate outrage from local residents and political opponents, who condemned the use of language associated with racist rhetoric.

In response to the public backlash, a Reform UK spokesman confirmed that Councillor Halden has been "immediately suspended" from his party duties pending a full investigation. The party stated it would not comment further until the inquiry is complete.

Thurrock Council has also launched its own formal standards investigation into the conduct of the councillor. The local authority will examine whether his actions breached the expected code of conduct for elected officials.

Meanwhile, Essex Police confirmed that they are "assessing the circumstances" surrounding the incident. While not a formal criminal investigation at this stage, the police assessment will determine if any laws were broken.

The scandal represents a significant embarrassment for Reform UK, which has sought to position itself as a legitimate political force. The incident in Thurrock raises serious questions about candidate vetting and the party's messaging on immigration and local issues.
