Rebel Wilson Faces Third Day of Cross-Examination in Defamation Case
Rebel Wilson Cross-Examined Third Day in Defamation Case

Rebel Wilson, known for her role in Pitch Perfect, is undergoing a third day of cross-examination in a defamation case brought by Charlotte MacInnes, the lead actor in Wilson's directorial debut, The Deb. MacInnes initiated civil proceedings after Wilson publicly alleged that MacInnes had complained about sexual harassment by the film's senior producer, Amanda Ghost, following a sunset swim at Bondi Beach in September 2023.

Background of the Incident

According to court documents, Ghost had a severe reaction to the cold water after the swim, prompting MacInnes to escort her back to their rented Bondi penthouse and run a hot bath. MacInnes also entered the bath because she was cold, with both women wearing swimwear. Wilson claims that MacInnes later confided in her about feeling uncomfortable about the situation. Wilson has further accused MacInnes of fabricating the complaint after being offered a record deal and a lead role in one of Ghost's other productions. MacInnes denies that any sexual harassment occurred and also denies making a complaint or lying about it in exchange for a music contract.

Court Proceedings

On Wednesday, Wilson told the Federal Court in Sydney that she regularly receives information about MacInnes from an Instagram group called the 'I hate Amanda Ghost fan club.' She explained that MacInnes had blocked her on social media, preventing her from checking for herself. Wilson also claimed that Ghost was 'spitting with rage' upon learning that a young actor had allegedly accused her of sexual harassment. Wilson recounted telling Ghost about the alleged complaint during a walk to Bourke Street Bakery in Callan Park, Sydney's inner-west, days after the Bondi incident. 'I remember her being very angry about Charlotte confiding in me,' Wilson said.

Defamation barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC challenged Wilson's account, pointing out that she had never previously mentioned Ghost being angry to the point of spitting. 'You made that up — you have never said that before today,' Chrysanthou said. Wilson countered, 'It's in my affidavit that she reacted angrily.' Chrysanthou also questioned Wilson about organizing a group trip to Hamilton Island for MacInnes and Ghost soon after the Bondi swim, despite Wilson believing a sexual harassment claim existed between them. Wilson admitted feeling confused at the time and unsure of what exactly happened.

Upcoming Hearing

The hearing resumes at 9:30 am, with Wilson expected to continue her testimony. The case has drawn significant media attention, with Daily Mail providing live coverage.
