Italian police stopped a party attended by Mick Jagger on the island of Stromboli because music is banned on Wednesdays. The Rolling Stones frontman, 82, was celebrating the wrap of the film Three Incestuous Sisters with cast members including Josh O'Connor, Jessie Buckley, Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Johnson and Isabella Rossellini.
The party took place at a local venue on Wednesday night when police arrived and asked them to stop due to a Wednesday music ban enacted by the mayor. According to Italian press reports, the music was played from a small speaker at an acceptable volume, causing confusion and hilarity among the partygoers, who reluctantly complied.
A local bookseller revealed the incident on social media, saying the party was stopped shortly before midnight after some residents complained to police about the noise. The film crew and actors left Stromboli on Thursday, with Jagger departing by private helicopter.
Riccardo Gullo, the mayor of Lipari, which administers Stromboli, could not be reached for comment. Rosa Oliva, president of the Pro Loco Amo Stromboli association, criticised the intervention, saying the island was being 'penalised in its moments of visibility' rather than supported, especially after a winter of shortages.
Jagger, who owns a home in Sicily, had arrived on Stromboli a few days earlier and was welcomed with discretion. The film is based on Audrey Niffenegger's novel and directed by Alice Rohrwacher, known for Happy as Lazzaro and La Chimera.
