Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen made an awkward remark during an interview with Sky Sports reporter Matt Chapman while discussing the club's search for a new manager. The exchange took place at Chester races on Saturday, shortly after Arne Slot's departure from Anfield.
When asked who he would choose for the role, Owen highlighted Andoni Iraola, the Bournemouth manager, as a likely candidate. He then questioned Chapman's knowledge of the Spaniard, saying: 'Do you know him?' After Chapman admitted he did not, Owen replied: 'I know him very well. I love the way you ask football questions, but you don't know anything about football.'
Chapman, a Tottenham fan, retorted that he knew about Premier League survival, adding 'that's all that matters.' Owen responded: 'Liverpool are a bit more than that, I think, but anyway.'
Iraola remains the frontrunner for the Liverpool job after guiding Bournemouth to a club-record sixth-place finish and Europa League qualification. Liverpool are expected to begin talks with his representatives this week, aiming to confirm the appointment before the World Cup starts on June 11.
