The leader of a neo-Nazi group has been sentenced for attempting to recruit individuals to carry out violent attacks against Jews and other racial minorities, including a plot involving individuals dressed as Santa Claus distributing poisoned sweets to children.
Sentencing of Michail Chkhikvishvili
Michail Chkhikvishvili, 22, from Georgia, known as 'Commander Butcher,' led the Eastern European neo-Nazi group the 'Maniac Murder Cult.' On Tuesday, a federal judge in Brooklyn sentenced him to 15 years in prison. He had pleaded guilty in November to soliciting hate crimes and distributing information on manufacturing bombs and ricin.
Details of the Plot
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenburg stated that Chkhikvishvili repeatedly called for the murder of innocent civilians, including children, and schemed to attack Jewish communities and racial minorities. One plot involved recruiting an associate to dress as Santa Claus and hand out poisoned candy to minority children.
Prosecutors described Chkhikvishvili as the leader of the Maniac Murder Cult, an international extremist group promoting neo-Nazi ideology aimed at triggering racial and religious war. The group's violent solicitations, spread via Telegram and outlined in the 'Hater's Handbook,' allegedly inspired multiple real-world killings, including a Nashville school shooting that killed a 16-year-old student.
Defense and Prosecution Arguments
In a letter to the judge, Chkhikvishvili expressed remorse, stating, 'I acknowledge that my actions have brought harm by spreading hatred and violence and I'm truly sorry for that.' His lawyer, Zachary Taylor, requested a five-year sentence, citing mental health struggles due to depression and bullying that led him to extremist content. Taylor argued that Chkhikvishvili has since reformed and faced harsh conditions during his confinement in Moldova.
Prosecutors highlighted that Chkhikvishvili traveled to Brooklyn in 2022 and encouraged hate crimes. In 2023, he solicited an undercover FBI employee to commit bombings and arsons. In 2024, he directed the agent to target Jewish communities, schools, and children with poison, providing detailed manuals on creating lethal poisons like ricin.
Court Remarks
US Attorney Joseph Nocella stated, 'The defendant is a hate-mongering menace who intended to hurt and kill children in the Jewish community and other minority communities in New York City. Today's sentence sends a strong message to hateful extremists.' US District Judge Carol Bagley Amon imposed concurrent 180-month sentences, emphasizing, 'The defendant is not sentenced because of his warped views. He is being sentenced for his calls to action.'
