Samantha Busch, widow of two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, made an emotional appearance at the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, just three days after the racing legend's sudden death at the age of 41. He died from complications of severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis.
The sport paused for a tribute before the first race since his passing. Samantha walked onto the track holding white roses, arm-in-arm with son Brexton, 11, while four-year-old daughter Lennix stayed close. Bagpipers played 'Amazing Grace' as she broke down in tears. Lennix wore black-and-white checkered bows in her hair as a nod to her father's legacy, and was placed into Samantha's arms by another mourner.
Young Brexton honoured his father by wearing a black cap with Kyle's iconic No. 8, which NASCAR has temporarily retired until he is old enough to race. Both Samantha and Brexton wore black T-shirts inscribed with 'Battle of the Busches'. Kyle's parents and older brother Kurt joined the tribute.
NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell delivered an emotional speech, saying, 'Every race track was Kyle Busch's home. He competed like he had something to prove every single race... It was the husband, the father, the guy who quietly did things for others.' He assured the family they are 'NASCAR family forever'.
Kyle's sudden passing followed recent health struggles. During a race on May 10, he urgently requested medical help, saying he needed a shot for a severe sinus infection. In his final interview, after winning a record fifth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series trophy, he said, 'You never know when the last one is going to be, so cherish them all.'
