New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has announced he will not attend Day 3 of the NFL Draft after agreeing to seek counseling in the wake of a photo scandal involving sports reporter Dianna Russini. The decision comes after suggestive images emerged showing Vrabel and Russini together at a luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona, sparking allegations of an affair.
Vrabel's Statement on Counseling
Speaking to ESPN's Mike Reiss, Vrabel said: "As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them. In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend." He added that he would advise any player to do the same and believes leading by example is crucial. Vrabel emphasized that this step will make him a better husband, father, and coach.
Background of the Scandal
The photos, published by Page Six, showed Vrabel and Russini hugging, lounging poolside, and laughing at the adults-only resort, which costs $2,500 per night. Both Vrabel and Russini, who are married with children, have denied an affair, claiming they were part of a larger group. However, additional images allegedly showing them having breakfast alone together have fueled speculation.
Russini resigned from her position at The Athletic last week amid the controversy. Vrabel has not faced punishment from the Patriots or the NFL but has now chosen to step away from the draft to focus on personal improvement.
Emotional Address to Media
On Tuesday, Vrabel addressed the scandal for the first time, telling reporters: "I've had some difficult conversations with people I care about - with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players. Those have been positive and productive." He acknowledged that good decisions are necessary for success on and off the field, adding, "I care deeply about this football team and I'm excited to coach them. I'm going to attack each day with humility and focus."
Vrabel, who has two sons with his wife Jen, will spend the weekend outside Massachusetts with his family. He promised that his family, the organization, and fans will get the best version of him going forward.
New Photos and Eyewitness Accounts
Page Six later published additional photos from March 28, showing Vrabel and Russini at breakfast. While sources claim they were with friends, multiple eyewitnesses reportedly said they appeared to be alone. One image shows Russini clearly visible at a table, with only the side of Vrabel's head in view, making it impossible to confirm if others were present. A source alleged that after breakfast, the pair walked separately to avoid being seen together.
The Daily Mail has contacted Dianna Russini and the New England Patriots for comment. The scandal has drawn significant media attention, but Vrabel remains focused on his family and coaching responsibilities.
