Mel Schilling's widower, Gareth Brisbane, has offered a glimpse into the family's private funeral following the tragic death of the Australian psychologist and dating expert last month at age 54 after a battle with cancer. She leaves behind her British husband of eight years and their ten-year-old daughter, Maddie.
Funeral and Daughter's Speech
Taking to Instagram, Gareth expressed pride in Maddie, who delivered a 'beautiful' speech at the funeral. The ceremony was live-streamed for Mel's family in Australia. Gareth shared that Maddie announced on the morning of the funeral that she had written a speech, which she delivered beautifully, embodying her mother's spirit.
Scattering Ashes in Northern Ireland
The family followed Mel's wishes by scattering some of her ashes at the lighthouse in Gareth's hometown of Whitehead, Northern Ireland. Gareth described it as a special place that resonated with Mel, where strangers greet each other, and a location they can return to for reflection on their 15 years together.
New Beginning in Bali
Gareth revealed that in a few weeks, he and Maddie will move to Bali to start a new chapter. He described Bali as a place of healing where they have dear friends who held a blessing ceremony for Mel at their new villa. The photo of Mel in white, chosen for her funeral, captures her glamour, warmth, and vulnerability.
Mel Schilling's Cancer Battle
Mel had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023 and was treated in London. She initially announced she was given the all-clear after a tumour the size of a lemon was removed, but later revealed the cancer had metastasised to her lungs in February 2024 and spread to her brain over Christmas 2025. Gareth confirmed her death in a heartfelt statement, praising her courage and love for their family.
