Newly released documents from the Jeffrey Epstein case have disclosed email exchanges between Ghislaine Maxwell and a correspondent identified as ‘A’, believed to be Prince Andrew, in which he asked her to find him “inappropriate friends”. The emails, dated August 2001 and 2002, were sent from Balmoral, the royal residence, and include references to leaving the Royal Navy and arranging meetings.
In one message, the sender, signing off as ‘A’ and referring to himself as ‘The Invisible Man’, wrote: “I am up here at Balmoral Summer Camp for the Royal Family... Have you found me some new inappropriate friends?” In a later exchange, Maxwell apologised for only finding “appropriate” friends, to which the sender replied “Distraught!”. The emails also mention a valet and the sender having left the ‘RN’, matching Prince Andrew’s departure from the Royal Navy in July 2001.
Further correspondence from February and March 2002 involved Maxwell forwarding messages about a trip to Peru, including plans to meet “girls”. A forwarded message stated: “I just gave Andrew your telephone no.” The recipient, Juan Esteban Ganoza, asked about the girls’ ages, and ‘A’ replied that he was “overwhelmed at the kindness and generosity of the offers”. The documents also reveal internal communications among US lawyers, who noted “various factual inaccuracies” in Prince Andrew’s accounts during the Epstein investigation. In June 2020, then-US Attorney Geoff Berman accused the prince of attempting to “falsely portray himself to the public as eager and willing to cooperate”. The Metropolitan Police recently contacted the FBI to inquire about any ongoing investigations related to Prince Andrew’s links to Epstein.
Prince Andrew has previously acknowledged his friendship with Ghislaine Maxwell but vigorously denies any wrongdoing. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the latest file release. There is no suggestion that being mentioned in the emails constitutes evidence of criminal activity.
