Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, is awaiting a decision from New York Judge Lewis Kaplan in the sexual assault case brought by Virginia Giuffre. The prince, who turns 62 next month, is attempting to have the case dismissed based on a 2009 settlement agreement between Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein, which included a non-disclosure clause that Giuffre argues does not apply to Andrew as he was not a party to it.
The allegations date back to 2001, when Giuffre claims she was trafficked by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell to have sex with the prince on three occasions: at Maxwell's London home, Epstein's New York mansion, and his private island in the US Virgin Islands. Andrew denies all allegations and says he has no recollection of meeting Giuffre.
Legal experts suggest that even if the case is dismissed, the prince's reputation will remain tarnished. If the case proceeds, Andrew would be required to give a deposition and appear in court, which could expose the royal family to further scandal. Royal author Robert Lacey has indicated that an out-of-court settlement is likely, though this would raise questions about who would pay, potentially involving the Queen.
The situation poses a significant threat to the monarchy, with the possibility of a settlement being funded by the Queen's private wealth, which could fuel republican sentiment. The prince's aggressive legal strategy, including arguments that he qualifies as a potential defendant in any Epstein-related case, has drawn criticism and may not ultimately clear his name.
