Matthew Biggs, the much-loved broadcaster known for his appearances on BBC Radio 4's Gardeners' Question Time, has died at the age of 65. He had been living with bowel cancer since 2020 and passed away on Thursday, just days after his final episode of the agricultural series aired.
The star made his final appearance on the programme on Friday 15 May, recorded at The Serge Hill Project. During the episode, which was broadcast during Mental Health Awareness Week, Biggs spoke emotionally about how his wife Gill had taken over gardening duties as his illness progressed. He said: 'The most difficult bit was when my mobility disappeared and I just wasted away.'
Mohit Bakaya, Controller of Radio 4, paid tribute: 'Everyone at Radio 4 is deeply grateful to Matthew for everything he has given to Gardeners’ Question Time over the years. He has been an extraordinary contributor and a true ambassador for Radio 4 in the horticultural world.' Dr Tim Upson from the RHS also praised his 'enthusiasm and passion' for engaging the public.
Biggs first appeared on Gardeners' Question Time in 1994. He also wrote books including Garden: Exploring the Horticultural World and A Home for Every Plant: Wonders of the Botanical World. His television credits included Channel 4's Garden Club and ITV's Grass Roots.
He is survived by his wife Gill, daughters Chloe and Jessica, and son Henry.
