A tragic discovery was made at the VELTINS-Arena, home of German football club FC Schalke 04, when a cleaner found a 65-year-old man dead in the toilet facilities on Thursday. The man, a local resident from Gelsenkirchen, is believed to have suffered a medical episode before collapsing.
Discovery and Initial Response
The cleaner made the grim find during a routine inspection of the restrooms. Police were immediately called to the scene and cordoned off the area as an investigation got underway. According to German outlet Bild, the man had attended an event at the stadium on Wednesday, yet his absence went unnoticed until his body was discovered the following day.
No Criminal Involvement Suspected
Authorities have stated that there is currently no suggestion of criminal involvement. However, questions are being raised about why no one realised the man was missing until the next day. The club has expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
Club Statement
FC Schalke 04 released a statement expressing their dismay: "FC Schalke 04 reacted with great dismay on Thursday to the news that a deceased person was found in a restroom at the VELTINS-Arena. Schalke 04 expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved. The investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing, and the club refers inquiries to the responsible police authority. At this time, Schalke 04 will therefore not release any further information. The club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation with all available means."
Background on Schalke and the Stadium
Schalke currently lead the second tier of German football after their relegation from the Bundesliga in 2023. They have not played a home game since a 4-1 win against Preussen Munster on Sunday, April 19. This weekend, they are away against Paderborn, and they will return to the VELTINS-Arena in a week's time to host Dusseldorf. The season concludes with a home match against Eintracht Braunschweig.
The VELTINS-Arena has been Schalke's home since August 2001, replacing the Parkstadion. With a capacity of 62,271, it hosted four games during the 2024 European Championships, including England's group clash with Serbia, Spain's showdown with Italy, and Georgia's match against Portugal. England also returned to the stadium for their round of 16 victory over Slovakia.
