Kobbie Mainoo has sent a clear message to Marcus Rashford that redemption is possible at Manchester United, as the midfielder is set to agree a bumper new long-term contract. The 21-year-old's resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick contrasts sharply with Rashford's current exile at Barcelona.
Mainoo's Turnaround at Old Trafford
Mainoo's situation has transformed dramatically since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim. The midfielder was previously omitted from the starting XI, playing fewer than 180 minutes under Amorim, and considered a loan move to Napoli to secure regular game time and a place in England's World Cup squad. However, Carrick's arrival has seen Mainoo become an integral part of the team, helping United climb to third place in the Premier League and contend for European qualification.
The interim boss is understood to have spoken with the club's hierarchy to highlight Mainoo's long-term value and endorsed the decision to significantly increase his wages. Mainoo's new contract will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031 and boost his weekly earnings by £100,000, rising from £20,000 per week.
Rashford's Uncertain Future
Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, has a £26 million permanent transfer fee agreed between the clubs. Barcelona have until June 15 to finalize the deal, but another loan next season remains a possibility. The 28-year-old was part of Amorim's 'bomb squad' last year, alongside Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, and was told to find another club. Garnacho joined Chelsea, Antony moved to Real Betis, and Sancho is on loan at Aston Villa.
Rashford has rediscovered his form at Barcelona, reaching 25 goal contributions this season, a level he previously achieved at Manchester United. If he returns to United, his £315,000-a-week wages would be reinstated, but game time appears to be his primary concern.
Mainoo's Example Offers Hope
Mainoo's redemption arc at United provides a clear example that fortunes can change for the better. Whether Rashford can see past his previous struggles and return to his boyhood club remains to be seen.
