A devastating explosion and subsequent fire at a lumber mill in midcoast Maine on Friday left several people injured, prompting authorities to declare a mass casualty event. The incident occurred at Robbins Lumber in the small town of Searsmont, home to approximately 1,500 residents, situated about 95 miles northeast of Portland.
Casualties and Response
Waldo County officials reported that at least five individuals sustained injuries as of midday, though a comprehensive assessment was still underway. A spokesperson for Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor confirmed that one patient was being treated in critical condition. The explosion sent a roaring blaze through the facility, drawing emergency responders from across the region.
“We have dumped all of the resources from the whole county over to that area,” said Mike Larrivee, Waldo County 911 director, underscoring the scale of the emergency response.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Maine State Police and fire marshals are on the scene, with state police spokesperson Shannon Moss confirming injuries but withholding further details pending updates. A call to Robbins Lumber was not immediately returned.
Robbins Lumber, a family-owned business for five generations, has operated since 1881. Its website describes the company as a “high-tech lumber manufacturer,” reflecting its role in Maine’s vital forest products industry.
Economic Impact
Lumber and wood products are a cornerstone of Maine’s economy, particularly in rural areas. According to the Maine Forest Products Council, the industry contributed over $8 billion to the state’s economy in 2024 and supports approximately 29,000 jobs. This incident highlights the risks faced by workers in this critical sector.
Official Statements
Public officials, including Governor Janet Mills, are monitoring the situation closely. “I urge folks to stay clear of the area, follow the instructions of law enforcement, and allow emergency personnel to respond. I ask Maine people to join me in keeping all those affected in their thoughts,” Mills posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Authorities continue to battle the fire and assess the full extent of injuries and damage. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
