Rapper Kodak Black, whose real name is Bill Kahan Kapri, is due in court in Orlando on Thursday after being charged with trafficking MDMA. The charge stems from an incident in November last year when gunshots were allegedly fired near a children's educational building, the Children's Safety Village.
The 28-year-old musician turned himself in to Orange County jail on Wednesday. An arrest warrant states that officers responding to a report of gunfire found a group of people around two SUVs, a Lamborghini and a BMW. During a search, police discovered a pink pill weighing about 25mg that tested positive for MDMA.
The pill was found inside a pink bag containing documents bearing Kapri's name and $37,000 in cash. The rapper initially denied the bag was his, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, but later tried to retrieve the cash, claiming it belonged to his business.
Kapri is charged with one count of trafficking MDMA (under 200mg), which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of three years, a maximum of 30 years, and a fine of up to $50,000. He has a history of arrests and was sentenced to three years in prison for a firearms charge in 2019 before being pardoned by Donald Trump in January 2021.
Bradford Cohen, Kapri's lawyer, told TMZ that the arrest has a “weak legal basis” and that his client was not in possession of the drugs. Cohen said Kapri was not a passenger in either car and that his fingerprint on a bottle of prescription cough medicine in the bag was innocent. A former TMZ journalist reported that Cohen claimed the charges will not stick, though no mention was made of the MDMA pill.
