Jimmy Kimmel Regrets Apology for Child's China Remark Made Under Disney Pressure
Kimmel Regrets Apology for Child's China Remark

Jimmy Kimmel has expressed regret over an apology he made in 2013 for a segment on his late-night show where a child suggested killing “everyone in China” to solve the national debt. Kimmel stated that he issued the apology under duress, doing so for the benefit of Disney, which owns ABC.

Apologies Under Duress

In addition to the China remark, Kimmel has also apologised for blackface impressions of Oprah Winfrey and Karl Malone from the 1990s. However, he views apologies not as a defeat but as a fundamental aspect of Catholicism. The late-night host reflected on these incidents during a recent interview, emphasising that some apologies were made under corporate pressure rather than personal conviction.

Suspension and Controversy

Last September, Kimmel faced a week-long suspension from ABC following controversial comments he made regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The incident led Kimmel to assert that he cannot host the show if he is micromanaged. He stated that Disney only required him to respond and move on, but the suspension highlighted tensions between the network and the comedian.

Melania Trump Joke Misinterpreted

Kimmel recently drew criticism from Donald Trump for a joke about Melania Trump having the “glow of an expectant widow” before an attempted shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Kimmel clarified that the joke was misinterpreted, explaining it was a reference to the age difference between Melania and Donald Trump, not a call to violence. He maintained that his intent was comedic, not malicious.
