John Stamos shared a poignant final photo with the late Bob Saget this week, as he and the star's widow Kelly Rizzo remembered the actor on what would have been his 70th birthday. Stamos, 63, who starred alongside Saget on Full House between 1987 and 1995, posted a photo posing with the late star, his widow Kelly Rizzo, 46, and Stamos' wife Caitlin McHugh, 40. The group posed in front of an ocean setting with the words 'last pic' scrawled above.
Remembering Bob Saget
Saget died aged 65 on January 9, 2022, following a freak head injury in his Florida hotel room, hours after coming off stage from a stand-up show. At the time of his death, he also had COVID-19. Stamos added: 'We used to throw each other great birthday parties. Your 70th today would've been epic! I miss you and love you.'
Marking his milestone birthday on May 17, Rizzo, who is now dating Breckin Meyer, reminisced on Saget's final birthday, which the couple celebrated in Mexico. Alongside a photo of the couple embracing, she wrote: 'His last birthday in Mexico. We had the best trip, this was his happy place. Relaxing at a resort with a cigar and some tequila eating some amazing ceviche and tacos and soaking up the sun laying by the pool. He really knew how to enjoy life and he loved bringing along people with him for the ride and watching them enjoy life to the fullest as well. He just wanted to share all of the beautiful delicious wonderful amazing.'
What Bob Would Be Doing Today
Rizzo later reflected on what Saget would be doing if he were still alive today, predicting the father-of-three would be revelling in being a grandpa. She wrote: 'Happy heavenly 70th birthday. Wow… 70. I always think about what Bob would be doing and what he'd be like if he were still here. First of all, he would absolutely want everyone to know he was the youngest-looking, youngest-feeling, and youngest-acting 70-year-old on the planet. (1000% true) And he'd still be going full steam ahead. Bob didn't believe in retirement. That word just wasn't in his vocabulary. He'd still be saying he was 'just getting started.' He would still love creating, working, making people laugh, and finding new ways to share his gifts with the world. And honestly, I think his greatest joy right now would've been being a grandpa… while still being the incredible dad, husband, friend, uncle, and so many other things to so many people. It would be so fun to watch him still out there absolutely killing it in the comedy world. He never, ever wanted to stop. He always talked about his dear friend Don Rickles still doing stand-up close to 90, and his other dear friend Norman Lear still going to work every day and making deals at nearly 100. That's how Bob saw his future.'
The Circumstances of His Death
Saget died of a brain bleed after hitting his head on something then going to sleep, completely unaware of how serious the injury was. His death stunned his global community of fans, not to mention his family, who said he was the happiest he had ever been when he died. He is best known for his role in Full House, where he portrayed widower Danny Tanner who had three daughters, including Michelle, played by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. A private funeral was held for the late entertainer in Los Angeles, which was attended by his Full House castmates Stamos, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, as well as friends and colleagues such as Jimmy Kimmel, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, and John Mayer.
It is not clear what he hit his head on, but whatever it was left a bruise on the back of his head. TMZ reported that authorities think it may have been the headboard of the bed, but cannot say for sure. His family said he was not aware of it when he went to sleep. 'The authorities have determined that Bob passed away from head trauma. They have concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep. No drugs or alcohol were involved,' the family said in a statement. A bump to the head can cause two fatal brain injuries: bruising or bleeding, or asphyxiation during unconsciousness. TMZ reports that Saget suffered a brain bleed. The cause of death was confirmed by a medical examiner in Florida, Joshua Stephany, who said Bob's death was 'the result of blunt head trauma' in a toxicology analysis.
The Surviving Suburbia actor was father to three daughters from his first marriage to marriage and family therapist Sherri Kramer, 65. After being single for more than 20 years, he married Rizzo in 2018.
