Israel has announced the killing of Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the leader of Hamas' military wing and one of the key architects of the October 7, 2023 attacks that sparked the war in Gaza. The Israeli army confirmed that al-Haddad was killed in a strike in Gaza City on Friday. He was among the last senior commanders in Hamas' military who had overseen the planning and execution of the devastating assault on Israel.
Succession and Role
Al-Haddad assumed the leadership of Hamas' military wing after his predecessor, Mohammed Sinwar, was killed earlier. Israeli officials stated that al-Haddad had directed the strategic planning and execution of the October 7 attacks, which resulted in significant casualties and led to the ongoing conflict. On Saturday, al-Haddad's family confirmed his death to The Associated Press.
Ceasefire Fragility
The killing comes at a time when the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains fragile. Key issues, such as the disarmament of Hamas, have stalled progress in the deal, raising concerns about the stability of the truce. The situation continues to be monitored closely by international observers as both sides navigate the delicate negotiations.
