HBO's Harry Potter Series Trailer Reveals New Star Amid Controversy
HBO's Harry Potter Series Trailer Shows New Star Amid Row

HBO has offered Harry Potter fans a fresh glimpse of their upcoming television series through an action-packed trailer, despite the considerable controversy surrounding the show. The compilation trailer, which highlights several of the streaming service's forthcoming releases, includes brief scenes of the young wizard, portrayed by 12-year-old Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin in this reimagining of J.K. Rowling's bestselling story.

Trailer Highlights

In the trailer, the new Harry is seen making his way to the iconic Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Later, he appears playing Quidditch before Ollivander, the wand-maker, delivers a pivotal line: 'I think we can expect great things from you.' The final shot shows Harry simply smiling. The series arrives a decade and a half after the original film series concluded and is reported to be a more faithful adaptation of the books than the cinematic versions.

Controversies Plaguing the Show

Despite excitement from HBO and many fans, the show has faced significant controversy from the outset. Dubbed the 'streaming event of the decade,' some former Potterheads have vowed to boycott the programme due to ongoing disputes over J.K. Rowling's comments about transgender people. However, with major stars like John Lithgow (Professor Albus Dumbledore) and Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid) on board, producers hope the love for the magic will overcome the backlash.

With over six months until the scheduled Christmas Day release, several scandals have already emerged. On Tuesday, it was revealed that the actor cast as Ginny Weasley had to drop out. Reports also detail thefts in the prop room, and the series lacks the backing of original film director Chris Columbus. In an extreme development, Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape, has faced death threats due to racist abuse, with trolls telling him to 'quit or I'll murder you' because they believe a black man should not play the character previously portrayed by Alan Rickman.

Bullying Allegations on Set

The show has also been hit with 'alarming' bullying accusations, including claims that two 12-year-old extras were spotted fighting on set. According to reports from March, Warner Brothers executives issued warnings to both adults and children, threatening expulsion from the show regardless of fame. A source stated: 'There are a lot of youngsters on set at any one time, and the reality is that not everyone is going to get on. It's an alarming problem and bosses want to get rid of any bad eggs among the cast and crew.' The source added that warnings about behaviour have been issued, and anyone reported for bullying will be immediately axed.

Other HBO Releases

The new HBO trailer also promoted the fourth season of The Gilded Age and the third season of House of the Dragon. The Harry Potter series is set to premiere on Christmas Day on HBO Max.
