Gates Foundation Initiates External Review of Epstein Connections

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced it is launching an external investigation into its historical ties with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This probe comes in the wake of explosive documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice last year, which thrust the relationship between Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Epstein back into the public spotlight.

Documents Prompt Foundation Scrutiny

In March, with the full support of Chair Bill Gates and independent Governing Board members, Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman commissioned an external review. This assessment will evaluate past foundation engagement with Epstein and examine current policies for vetting and developing new philanthropic partnerships. The foundation stated in an official release that the review is currently underway, with an update expected for the board and management this summer.

The Department of Justice files, released last year, contained emails, photographs, and communications between Epstein and staff members of the Gates Foundation. These documents have raised serious questions about the extent and nature of the foundation's connections to the disgraced financier.

Internal Communications and Staff Apologies

CEO Mark Suzman addressed the review in a memo to foundation staff on Tuesday, acknowledging this as a challenging period for the organization. He emphasized the critical importance of taking decisive actions now to address these issues. The memo, viewed by The Wall Street Journal, also referenced recent layoffs within the foundation.

According to reports, a recent board meeting in London included a dedicated session on the impact of the Justice Department's Epstein files and their implications for the foundation's work and public reputation.

Bill Gates has consistently maintained that his relationship with Epstein was confined to philanthropy-related discussions, describing it as a mistake to have met with him. In February, Gates apologized to foundation staff during a town hall meeting, calling his association with Epstein a "huge mistake" and expressing regret for involving foundation executives in meetings with the convicted sex offender.

Controversial Email Allegations and Photographic Evidence

The released documents include a particularly controversial email drafted by Epstein in 2013 for one of Gates' advisors. The email, which contains typographical errors, appears to allege that Gates contracted a sexually transmitted disease and requested antibiotics to secretly administer to his then-wife, Melinda. It reads: "TO add insult to injury you them implore me to please delete the emails mails regarding your std, your request that I provide you antibiotics that you can surreptitiously give to Melinda and the description of your penis."

Another section of the email expresses dismay at Gates's decision to "disregard our friendship developed over the last six years."

Photographic evidence from the document tranche shows Gates pictured with two women whose faces were blurred, as well as standing alongside Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew. An additional image reveals that Epstein kept a framed photograph of Gates on the wall at his private island mansion.

Personal Admissions and Congressional Testimony

During the town hall meeting, Gates acknowledged having two affairs with Russian women—one with a bridge player met at events, and another with a nuclear physicist encountered through business activities. He stressed that Epstein later became aware of these affairs but emphasized they did not involve any of Epstein's victims. "I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit," Gates stated. "To be clear, I never spent any time with the victims, the women around him."

Gates is scheduled to testify before Congress in June regarding his Epstein ties. This comes amid broader personal and professional transitions for the billionaire, who announced last year his intention to give away 99 percent of his immense fortune over the coming years, leaving just one percent for himself and his children. He has vowed to shutter the Gates Foundation by December 31, 2045, effectively concluding his lifelong philanthropic project.

The foundation has also seen significant leadership changes, with Gates' ex-wife Melinda resigning in May 2024 following their separation, which was reportedly influenced by Gates' rumored closeness to Epstein.

The Daily Mail has contacted the Gates Foundation for additional comment on these developments.
