Farage to Make Statement on Future Amid Finances Scrutiny

Nigel Farage has announced he will “make a statement on my future in public life” at 2pm, as he faces intense scrutiny over financial support provided by a convicted fraudster and a £5 million gift from a Reform UK donor. The Reform UK leader is under pressure following reports that long-term ally George Cottrell had funded security and staffing for Farage in the year before he was elected as an MP.

Electoral Commission Investigation Sought

Labour has asked the Electoral Commission to investigate whether the support from Cottrell should have been declared, given that Farage was a prominent figure in Reform UK even before returning to frontline politics. The party also questioned whether Cottrell, who is based in Montenegro, was a permissible donor, claiming it was not clear whether he was on a UK electoral register at the time.

Farage is already facing a separate parliamentary investigation over a £5 million gift he received from Reform donor Christopher Harborne before becoming an MP. In a post on X, Farage stated: “I will make a statement on my future in public life at 2pm.”

Background of Scrutiny

The developments come amid broader scrutiny of Farage’s financial arrangements and his role as leader of Reform UK. The Electoral Commission has yet to confirm whether it will launch an investigation into the Cottrell donations, but Labour’s request has intensified pressure on the commission to act.
