Farage Humiliated as Clacton By-Election Boycott Backfires

Nigel Farage's attempt to trigger a by-election in Clacton by resigning as an MP has spectacularly backfired, with all major political parties announcing they will boycott the contest. Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, and the right-wing Restore party all declared they would not field candidates, leaving Farage facing the prospect of a one-sided battle against comedian Count Binface.

Political Rivals Unite in Boycott

A Labour spokesman said: "Nigel Farage is engulfed in a sleaze scandal and he's desperately trying to change the subject. It's pathetic, and the Labour Party is not going to indulge it." The party's National Executive Committee decided not to stand a candidate in what they called "this circus."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speaking at the NATO summit in Turkey, described the move as "a desperate stunt from Nigel Farage and it's obvious why he's doing it - he is up to his neck in sleaze." He added: "Politics should be about improving the lives of millions of people, not about personal gain, not about hiding dodgy donations."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said her party would not stand a candidate in the "fake" by-election, which she said Farage was "causing to distract people from what is happening." Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey urged all parties to "stand aside and refuse to give oxygen to Farage's vanity project."

Farage's Sleaze Scandal

The by-election move came as Farage faced a probe by the parliamentary commissioner for standards over his failure to declare a £5 million gift from Thai-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before his election as an MP. He also faces separate allegations of failing to declare financial benefits from convicted criminal George Cottrell, known as "Posh George."

Farage has denied any wrongdoing, stating: "Making money is not a crime. I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all." He framed the by-election as a "people versus the establishment" contest, saying: "It's a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment."

Cost and Consequences

Farage offered for Reform UK to pay the estimated £200,000 cost of the by-election, but a Labour source dismissed the offer, stating: "A political figure paying for a by-election he is standing in would clearly undermine the independence of the democratic process." They added: "He cannot just buy his way out of the mess he's got himself into."

Former Tory leader Lord Howard called the by-election "a typical piece of Farage trickery designed to avoid parliamentary scrutiny." TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak said: "Farage is jumping before he's pushed. This is straight out of the Trumpian playbook."

The resignation means the standards probe into the £5 million gift is likely to be paused, but would be revived if Farage wins the by-election and returns to Parliament. If he is later found to have breached rules and suspended for over 10 days, it could trigger a second by-election in Clacton.
