The long-running Broadway hit 'The Book of Mormon' has cancelled performances through May 17 due to an electrical fire at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. The blaze, which started on May 4 in an electrical room, caused substantial damage to the venue, according to New York Fire Department Assistant Chief David Simms.
Ticket holders for affected performances will be contacted by their point of purchase to arrange refunds or rescheduling. ATG Entertainment and the show's producers issued a joint statement thanking firefighters for their 'bravery and speedy response.'
Simms reported that the fire was largely confined to the fourth floor and a backroom containing lighting equipment and chandeliers, with some water damage also sustained. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
'The Book of Mormon' has been a mainstay on Broadway since its 2011 debut at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, surpassing 5,000 performances. The theatre, which opened in 1925, has hosted numerous acclaimed productions including 'Sweeney Todd' and 'Spring Awakening.'
