A driver caught with nearly a kilo of cannabis worth £6,500 in his car has been warned to expect a prison sentence.

David Maharg, 45, of Avalon Place, Caldercruix, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis. The offence occurred on April 3 last year when police stopped his Nissan Juke at the Raith interchange on the M74.
Prosecutor Connor McIntyre told the court: "They stopped the vehicle at 10.50pm and Maharg, the sole occupant, was detained. He admitted there was cannabis in the boot and this was recovered. It weighed 956g."
Sentencing Adjourned
Maharg was conveyed to Motherwell police station where he made no reply when charged. Sheriff Liam Murphy called for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment before adjourning the case until next month.
The sheriff told Maharg: "Given the nature of the charge I'm considering a custodial sentence." He also ordered the destruction of the cannabis and two phones seized from the accused.
