Cheryl Fergison Loses £500k in Accountant Scam

Former EastEnders actress Cheryl Fergison has spoken candidly about a devastating financial scam that has left her unlikely to ever own a home again. The actress, best known for playing Heather Trott on the BBC soap between 2007 and 2012, with a brief return in 2016, revealed that an accountant stole between £400,000 and £500,000 from her.

A Costly Deception

In a detailed interview with The Times, Cheryl explained how the accountant provided false documentation claiming to have filed and paid her taxes to HMRC. In reality, the individual had taken the substantial sum for themselves. This deception left Cheryl with a massive tax bill that she was legally obligated to settle, despite being the victim of fraud.

"I found out I had been defrauded by an accountant who hadn't filed or paid my taxes," Cheryl stated. "They showed me false proof that they had sent everything to HMRC, but in reality they had taken the money. HMRC said it was still my responsibility to pay it and I lost between £400,000 and £500,000."

Financial Fallout and Home Loss

The financial impact was severe and immediate. Cheryl was forced to sell her home to cover the losses and address the resulting financial difficulties. She described the experience as her worst business decision, one that continues to affect her years later. "I had this massive pay cheque and I put it in the bank, but had to take it out to pay the taxman. I'm still chasing my tail from it," she admitted.

This traumatic event has fundamentally altered her perspective on property ownership. Cheryl now believes renting is her only viable option moving forward, shifting her focus from assets to experiences.

Prioritising Life Over Property

"I've realised that renting is probably the way to go for me from now on," Cheryl explained. "It's memories that mean the most to me, and I'd rather spend money on experiences with my son and my friends than anything else." This philosophical shift marks a significant change for the actress, who once owned a home but now sees freedom in not being tied to a mortgage or property maintenance.

Health Challenges Compound a Difficult Year

Cheryl's financial revelations come alongside her recovery from a serious health scare. In May 2025, she suffered a stroke that left her unable to walk or talk initially. Appearing on BBC Breakfast, she provided an update on her gradual recovery, emphasising the importance of a positive mindset.

"I'm getting there slowly, I'm recovering slowly. It's a long process but my mind is positive now," she told hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty. "It wasn't in the beginning but it is now. I'm happy to be here, to be quite honest."

A Year of Milestones and Challenges

The year 2025 proved particularly eventful for Cheryl beyond the stroke. She turned 60, wrote her autobiography, and faced these significant health and financial challenges simultaneously. Her book, she revealed, explores many of the stresses that have accumulated throughout her life and career.

"It highlights a lot of the stresses that have been caused over the years, and I think it was a build up," Cheryl noted. "My blood pressure was always high. Our industry is renowned for being quite a stressful business, it's kind of feast and famine with us." This reflection underscores the unpredictable nature of acting careers and their potential impact on both financial stability and physical health.

Cheryl Fergison's story serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities individuals face, even with substantial earnings, and the long-lasting consequences of financial fraud. Her resilience in facing both health and monetary setbacks demonstrates a remarkable strength as she rebuilds her life on new terms.
