Chelsea Fan Favourite Jason Cundy Sold to Tottenham Behind His Back

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has revealed that the club sold him to bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur in 1992 without his consent. Cundy, a boyhood Chelsea fan who came through the club's academy, was told of the move just days before the transfer deadline.

Speaking on the Undr The Cosh podcast, Cundy explained that the deal was driven by financial reasons. Chelsea agreed a secret £850,000 transfer with Spurs in March 1992, with Cundy initially joining on loan until the end of the season before the move was made permanent. He was only informed by manager Ian Porterfield on the Monday before the deadline.

Cundy said: 'My dream was to play for Chelsea. I'd been there since I was 11 and I didn't want to play for anyone else. I was playing well. But I did hear a rumour, maybe two weeks before, someone did mention something to me about Spurs and I was like, “What are you on about? That's rubbish.”' He added that Porterfield told him the offer had been accepted and that Terry Venables would call him later that day.

The defender felt let down by his boyhood club for not considering his feelings. He made only 28 appearances for Tottenham before being loaned out and eventually joining Ipswich Town in 1996. Cundy retired in 2000 after a spell at Portsmouth.
