A Spring Airlines flight from Tokyo to Shanghai was forced to make an emergency landing after a male passenger became aggressive when his request to swap seats to sit with his girlfriend was refused. The incident occurred on Monday evening, with the flight departing from Narita International Airport.
The man reportedly made complaints during boarding and continued to argue with cabin crew for nearly two hours after take-off. Despite the airline's explanation that he would have to remain in his assigned seat for the three-hour flight, the passenger's behaviour escalated, prompting the pilot to notify Japanese authorities and turn the aircraft back to Narita.
The flight, which was about 30 minutes from landing in Shanghai, returned to Narita at 11pm, where police removed the passenger. One witness expressed frustration, stating that the man could have settled down so everyone could reach their destination.
Spring Airlines offers various seating options, including 'Party Seats' to allow passengers to sit together, but it is unclear why the couple did not book adjacent seats. Former Virgin Atlantic captain Pete the Irish Pilot warned that swapping seats after take-off could dangerously affect the aircraft's balance, potentially causing issues during take-off and landing.
