Cat Little Claims Olly Robbins Refused Access Over Mandelson Vetting
Cat Little: Robbins Refused Mandelson Vetting Access

A senior Cabinet Office official has alleged that Sir Olly Robbins obstructed her access to security vetting documents concerning Peter Mandelson, prompting her to take the unusual step of requesting them directly from UK Security Vetting.

Cat Little's Testimony to MPs

Cat Little, a senior figure in the Cabinet Office, gave evidence to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee on Thursday. She stated that she had "specifically asked" for the vetting documents and any related decision-making audit regarding Lord Mandelson's appointment as ambassador. However, she said Sir Olly Robbins made it clear that the requested information "would not be forthcoming."

Unusual Judgement

Faced with this refusal, Ms Little decided to take an "unusual judgement" and request the information directly from UK Security Vetting. She explained that this action was necessary to fulfil her duty to advise the Prime Minister on compliance with a "humble address"—a formal request from Parliament for documents.

The revelation adds a new layer of controversy to the ongoing row over Lord Mandelson's vetting process for the ambassador role. The Labour peer was appointed as ambassador despite initial concerns about his security clearance.

Ms Little's testimony suggests a breakdown in communication within the Cabinet Office, with a senior official allegedly blocking access to crucial documents. The Foreign Affairs Select Committee is now expected to scrutinise the matter further.
