California 'Party Mom' Gets 35 Years for Child Sex Crimes

A California woman dubbed the 'party mom' has been sentenced to over three decades in prison after admitting to hosting secret parties for teenagers where alcohol was provided and sexual assaults occurred. Shannon O'Connor, 52, of Los Gatos, received a sentence of 35 years and 10 months on Thursday, following her conviction on 48 charges including sexual penetration of an intoxicated victim and influencing a child to engage in sexual activity.

The Parties and the Crimes

Prosecutors said O'Connor allowed dozens of high school freshmen, aged 13 to 15, to party at her $4.7 million mansion at least six times between 2020 and 2021. The gatherings were fueled by vodka, Fireball whiskey, beer, and hard seltzers. Several girls were sexually assaulted during the parties, which O'Connor claimed were meant to help her son cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.

O'Connor's Apology and Courtroom Reactions

In court, O'Connor tearfully apologized, saying she was 'ashamed' and wished she could undo her actions. However, she denied any sexual interest in minors, stating, 'I have never had any sexual inclinations for your children.' Deputy District Attorney Joanne Lee dismissed the apology as 'deeply offensive' and lacking accountability, adding, 'This isn't the Academy Awards.' The jury shook their heads during O'Connor's statement.

Victim Impact Statements

Victims and their families delivered powerful statements. One mother said, 'Your sick secrets have been exposed. I hope the judge locks you up for good and throws away the key.' A victim identified as Jane Doe 7 said O'Connor controlled her life when she dated her son at age 14. Another victim called O'Connor 'pathetic' and demanded the maximum sentence.

Defense Arguments and Sentencing

Defense attorney Stephen Prekoski argued against the maximum, noting O'Connor would likely die in prison. The prosecution had sought 41 years. O'Connor was found guilty of 48 charges, including providing alcohol to minors, annoying or molesting a child, and attempting to dissuade a witness. She has already served five years in jail.
