West Ham keeper Areola's wife blasts Nuno and Potter after relegation
Areola's wife slams Nuno and Potter over West Ham relegation

The wife of West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has launched a scathing attack on manager Nuno Espirito Santo following the club's relegation from the Premier League. West Ham's 14-year stay in the top flight ended on Sunday, despite a 3-0 victory over Leeds United on the final day, as Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 win against Everton confirmed the Hammers' demotion to the Championship.

Social Media Outburst

Marrion Areola took to social media to express her fury, targeting both Nuno and former boss Graham Potter. She blamed the pair for West Ham's relegation and criticised them for dropping her husband from the starting lineup. In a series of posts, she shared an image of Areola holding the 2023 Europa Conference League trophy and wrote: 'From a trophy to relegation. Thank you Potter for the start of this season and Nuno for the end.' She also added a broken heart emoji, reflecting the club's decline from European success to relegation.

Goalkeeper Controversy

Areola lost his place as West Ham's first-choice goalkeeper under Potter after the club signed Mads Hermansen from Leicester City for £18 million in the summer. However, Areola regained his spot after Hermansen struggled in the opening four matches, which saw West Ham lose three times and concede 11 goals. Areola then played in the next 20 Premier League matches, 19 of which were under Nuno. During that period, West Ham won only four games, with Areola conceding 37 goals and failing to keep a clean sheet. Hermansen was reinstated after a 3-2 loss to Chelsea in late January, despite West Ham leading 2-0 at halftime.

Marrion accused Nuno of dropping her husband 'for no particular reason,' writing: 'Being dropped at the beginning of the season for no reason. Being back after a very bad start and then has made 20 games and all of a sudden: "I'm really sorry - you won't start", "Why?", "For no particular reason but I'm sorry."'

Impact on France World Cup Hopes

Marrion also blamed Nuno for Areola missing out on France's squad for the upcoming World Cup. She shared highlights of Areola's five appearances for the national team and wrote: 'And NO World Cup this year, thank you Nuno.' Areola had been part of France's last two World Cup squads, winning in 2018 and finishing as runners-up in 2022, though he did not play in either tournament. The 33-year-old goalkeeper, who joined West Ham in 2021, has one year remaining on his contract.

Nuno's Response

Nuno refused to discuss his own future after relegation was confirmed. He said: 'If you ask me now about the past and the future, this is not the day. Today is to understand the moment of sadness for our fans, of ourselves, of the club. Our attention was all on achieving the mission that we didn't accomplish. Now we need to go to this period of sadness.' When pressed on whether he would stay, he added: 'You keep insisting about that, but my mind is not there. Next press conference, for sure we can speak about that, but today is not about this.'
