Royal Expert Brands Andrew a 'Useful Idiot' in Alleged Russian Spy Plot

The former Duke of York, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has been brutally slammed by a royal expert after an alleged security services document detailed efforts by Russian spies to utilise him as an access point to the Royal Family. The document, reportedly from an undisclosed US security agency, identifies Andrew as a possible target for 'cultivation' by Kremlin operatives.

Alleged Security Document Details Russian Targeting

According to the Daily Mail, which published details from a source, the ex-Prince was targeted without his knowledge by the Kremlin. The publication claims to have seen a highly classified report outlining how Andrew was regarded as a useful idiot and potential weak link by Russian agents. The uncorroborated secret report, titled Political Corruption: Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and dated January 15 this year, includes an intelligence appraisal finding Russian spooks developed networks using figures such as Jeffrey Epstein for access to political and business leaders.

Andrew, referred to by his initials AMW, was cultivated by Russian intelligence to have a figure close to the British Royal Family, the source stated. This comes as Andrew, 66, faces his own legal troubles, having been arrested last week on suspicion of misconduct in public office, adding to the embarrassment for the Firm amid his continued mentions in the Epstein files.

Expert Analysis and Broader Intelligence Concerns

Royal expert Andrew Lownie, author of Andrew's biography Entitled, told the Mail that the report spotlights Andrew as a useful idiot. He suggested that intelligence agencies in the US believe Andrew was used by spies to further their influence. They will seek out the weakness and exploit it, and in Andrew's case, he's been their useful idiot, Lownie said, comparing the tactics to those used with historical spies.

Lownie added that Russian intelligence isn't the only threat, noting Chinese intelligence has also penetrated the establishment, with the Royal Family, specifically Andrew, being a soft underbelly due to lack of oversight. While Andrew has never been connected to Russian intelligence services, previously secret documents released last year revealed an ex-advisor believed alleged Chinese spy Yang Tengbo was his only light at the end of the tunnel after a disastrous Newsnight interview in 2019.

The documents also showed Andrew had a communication channel with Chinese President Xi Jinping, to whom he sent annual birthday letters. Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein and other allegations.
