Alex Scott Speaks Out After BBC Axes Football Focus After 52 Years
Alex Scott on Football Focus Axed After 52 Years

Alex Scott has broken her silence following the announcement that BBC's Football Focus is being axed after a remarkable 52-year run. The Saturday football preview show, which has been a staple of BBC One's schedule since 1974, will end at the conclusion of the current season due to declining viewership and shifting audience habits.

Alex Scott's Statement

The 41-year-old presenter, who took over the reins in 2021 after Dan Walker's 12-year tenure, revealed that she had always intended this to be her final season. In a statement, Scott said: "I always knew this would be my last season on the show, which the BBC were aware of too. My intention was to move quietly into the next chapter, but sometimes things change."

Despite the abrupt end, Scott remains a key figure at BBC Sport, with the corporation confirming she will lead coverage of the Men's World Cup this year and the Women's World Cup in 2027, as well as continuing her role on the Women's Super League and BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

BBC's Decision

BBC Sport Director Alex Kay-Jelski praised Scott as "one of our finest presenters" and emphasised that the decision was not a reflection of her performance. He stated: "Football Focus has been a hugely important programme in the history of BBC Sport and has played a key role in telling the stories of the game for generations of viewers. This decision was made before last week’s wider BBC savings announcement, reflecting the continued shift in how audiences engage with football and our commitment to evolving how we deliver content to reach fans wherever they are."

The BBC cited "changing audience behaviours" as a primary factor, with many football fans now consuming content through social media and digital platforms rather than traditional television. The corporation is also under financial pressure, with the licence fee facing scrutiny and savings being sought across the board.

Declining Ratings

While the BBC has not published recent viewing figures, reports indicate that the audience for Football Focus has dropped significantly, from 849,000 in 2019 to just 564,000 by 2023. This downward trend has been a concern for some time, with Dan Walker predicting the show's end back in 2023 when he said: "It’s hard to see Football Focus struggling… I hope it stays part of the TV landscape."

Scott, who will be the last presenter of the long-running show, is said to have been left feeling "bruised" by the BBC's inquests into its declining performance. However, she remains committed to her future projects with the broadcaster, including an exciting new venture that is yet to be announced.
