Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old star of Netflix's hit series Adolescence, could make history at tonight's Emmy Awards by becoming the youngest male winner ever. The Warrington schoolboy, who was 14 when the show was filmed, is nominated for best supporting actor for his role as a troubled teen accused of murder.
Cooper attended pre-Emmy parties in Hollywood on Friday with his parents, Noreen and Andy. He said: 'I will never forget this for the rest of my life. If I break the record that would be cool. It's all next level. This time last year I didn't know what I'd be doing.'
The current record holder is Scott Jacoby, who won best supporting actor at age 16 in 1973. Cooper faces competition from co-star Ashley Walters, as well as Javier Bardem, Bill Camp, Peter Sarsgaard and Rob Delaney. Adolescence has 13 Emmy nominations, including best limited series.
The show recently won two prizes at the National Television Awards, including best new drama and best drama performance for Cooper. He was unable to attend the UK ceremony due to Emmy commitments, but a pre-recorded message was played thanking fans.
