Wrexham heads into the final round of Championship matches on Saturday needing to secure a playoff spot to keep alive its dream of reaching the Premier League. The club, co-owned by Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, is in sixth place, the last playoff position, with one game remaining.
Wrexham faces a tough test at home against fourth-placed Middlesbrough, which still has a chance to finish second. The battle for the final playoff spot involves three teams: Wrexham, Hull City (seventh, level on points but behind on goal difference), and Derby County (eighth, one point further back). Hull hosts Norwich City, while Derby takes on Sheffield United at home.
Regardless of the outcome, Wrexham is already assured of its highest league finish in its 162-year history, surpassing the 15th-place finish in the 1978–79 season. A fourth straight promotion would be unprecedented in English football, having never been achieved before. Midfielder Ollie Rathbone noted that everyone would have accepted this scenario at the start of the season.
The final day also has significant implications in the Premier League, with Arsenal leading Manchester City by three points in the title race, though City has a game in hand. At the bottom, Tottenham Hotspur sits in the relegation zone, two points from safety with four games left.
