One in Five Americans Want to Leave US, Young Women Lead Trend
1 in 5 Americans Want to Leave US, Poll Finds

A significant and growing number of Americans are expressing a desire to permanently leave the United States, according to a major new survey. The data reveals a profound demographic shift in who is most keen to start a new life abroad.

Young Women Driving the Exodus

The Gallup survey, conducted in November 2025, indicates that one in five Americans now wish to emigrate. This trend is being overwhelmingly driven by young women. Among women aged 15 to 44, a staggering 40 percent have expressed a desire to move abroad. This figure is four times higher than it was just a decade ago, signalling a rapid change in sentiment.

Furthermore, a record 21-percentage-point gender gap has emerged. While two in five young women want to leave, the same desire is held by only 19 percent of young men.

A Political and Social Turning Point

The poll data suggests the wish to emigrate saw a significant initial increase in 2016, prior to Donald Trump's first term as president. This trend has continued to rise under the administration of Joe Biden.

Analysts point to major social and political events as potential catalysts for this sustained increase. The overturning of Roe v Wade, which ended the federal right to abortion in the US, is cited as a key factor likely influencing the opinions of many young women.

Where Americans Dream of Relocating

For those looking to leave, the clear favourite destination remains Canada. Its proximity and cultural similarities make it an attractive option for many seeking a change. Other popular choices for aspiring American emigrants include the scenic landscapes of New Zealand, the rich culture of Italy, and the technological hub of Japan.

This data paints a picture of a changing American dream, where for a substantial minority, the ideal future lies beyond the nation's borders.
