Andy Serkis, director of the upcoming Lord of the Rings film The Hunt for Gollum, has shed light on why Jamie Dornan's character, Aragorn, is credited as "Strider" in the movie. Serkis explained that at this particular stage of his journey, Aragorn is living as a ranger in the wilderness and would not yet identify himself by his full name, hence the use of "Strider".
Character Development
In the timeline of the film, set between The Hobbit trilogy and The Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn is a solitary figure who has not yet embraced his royal heritage. Serkis noted, "He's in hiding, protecting the Shire and the borders, and he wouldn't go around calling himself Aragorn. That name comes later."
Casting and Approval
Jamie Dornan steps into the role previously played by Viggo Mortensen, who has given his "seal of approval" to the casting despite some fan disappointment. Mortensen had expressed openness to reprising the role if appropriate for his age but ultimately supported the recasting.
The film, scheduled for release in December 2027, follows Strider's quest to track Gollum before he can reveal the One Ring's location to Sauron. Serkis also reprises his role as Gollum via motion capture.
